Abū al-Ḥajjāj based this work upon Qur’anic proofs and arguments drawn from the Ḥadīth, adorning it with rational reflections and embellishing it with original insights, thereby demonstrating its noble foundations and pointing to its distinguished provenance. He further supported these with scholarly consensus and the sciences of the Arabic language, all of which possess the highest degree of strength and probative force.

In this approach, he benefited from Abū al-Maʿālī al-Juwaynī in the direction he adopted, while in a number of his discussions he relied upon the methodology of Abū Bakr al-Bāqillānī. He thus combined the two approaches, and in his thought drew from the light of those two luminaries.

ظل كتاب الفصول والمقدمات لأبي الحجاج السَّرَ قُسْطي الضرير (ت. ٥٢٠) مطوياً عن أفئدة العالمين...وأقام أبو الحجاج كتابه هذا على الدلائل القرآنية، والحجج الحديثية، وطرزه بأنظار العقول،و وشاه بأبكار الفهوم، ليدل على أصلها الشريف، ويليح إلى محتده الكريم، معتضداً بالإجماع وعلوم اللسان، وهاته في أعلى ما يكون قوة ودلالة.وهذا الرَّسْمُ قد ارتفق بأبي المعالي الجُوَيْني في نَحِيتَتِه، وعوَّل في جملة من مسائله على أبي بكر الباقلاني في طريقته، فجمع بين النظرين، وصدر في فكره من ذيك النيرين.
