al-Jawahir al-Mudiyyah fi Tabaqat al-Hanafiyyah

A major classical biographical dictionary of the Ḥanafī school, compiled by the Egyptian Ḥanafī jurist and ḥadīth scholar Imām Muḥyī al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn Abī al-Wafāʾ al-Qurashī (d. 775 AH). It is among the earliest substantial works devoted specifically to collecting the biographies of the scholars of the Ḥanafī madhhab.

Al-Qurashī gathers the biographies of a vast body of scholars associated with the school, beginning with Imām Abū Ḥanīfah and the early transmitters of his madhhab and continuing through successive generations of Ḥanafī jurists. The entries record, according to the information available to the author, such matters as a scholar’s lineage, teachers and students, scholarly position, works, significant events in his life and date of death. The biographies are arranged alphabetically, followed by supplementary sections for kunyas, lineages and titles.

The work is particularly valuable because it draws upon a wide range of earlier biographical, historical, ḥadīth and ṭabaqāt literature, preserving a considerable amount of information concerning Ḥanafī scholars, their networks of learning and the transmission of the madhhab. It therefore serves not merely as a collection of biographies, but as an important source for the intellectual and institutional history of the Ḥanafī school.

This Dār al-Risālah al-ʿĀlamiyyah edition was just reprinted after being out of print for over a decade and is the relied-upon edition for this foundational work in Hanafi Tarajim.
