Features of Qalyūbī’s Ḥāshiyah ʿalā al-Iqnāʿ

• The Ḥāshiyah of al-ʿAllāmah al-Qalyūbī is described as one of the most important marginal commentaries upon al-Iqnāʿ and became an important reference for resolving many of the legal questions discussed in the Shāfiʿī school.
  
• It is distinguished by careful quotation and documentation, transmitting from Imām al-Shāfiʿī, al-Muzanī and major earlier and later authorities such as al-Rāfiʿī, al-Nawawī and Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī.
  
• Particular attention is given to the opinions of Qalyūbī’s teachers al-Ramlī and al-Ziyādī. When he refers simply to “our Shaykh” (shaykhunā), he generally intends al-Ramlī, while an attribution specifically to al-Ziyādī is explicitly identified.
  
• The ḥāshiyah is concise and focused in presentation. It generally avoids lengthy introductions at the beginnings of books and chapters and does not frequently reproduce extensive linguistic definitions or detailed proofs from the Qurʾān, Sunnah and ijmāʿ.
