al-Mukhassas

Al-Mukhaṣṣaṣ is regarded as one of the finest classical Arabic lexical works arranged by subject. Rather than following an alphabetical order, the dictionary is organised into extensive thematic sections covering such subjects as the creation of man, human characteristics, women, clothing, food, diseases, dwellings, weapons, horses, camels, sheep, wild animals, insects, birds, astronomy, time, weather, water, palm trees and plants, minerals, and many other topics.

Each major section is further divided into detailed chapters according to the various branches of its principal subject, creating a carefully structured semantic arrangement. Beginning with mankind, human nature, and human needs, the author then moves through the animal kingdom—starting with those creatures most closely associated with human life—before proceeding to the heavens, time, natural phenomena, minerals, and the rest of the created world. This systematic organisation makes Al-Mukhaṣṣaṣ one of the most important and methodically arranged thematic dictionaries in the classical Arabic tradition.

يعدّ المخصص من أحسن كتب المعاني القديمة التي بين أيدينا تبويباً(1). فهذا المعجم مقسّم إلى عدد من الكتب المسهبة ، تحمل العناوين التالية :
خلق الإنسان ، الغرائز، النساء، اللباس ، الطعام، الأمراض، المنازل، السلاح، الخيل، الإبل، الغنم، الوحوش، الحشرات، الطير، الأنواء والسماء والفلك، الدهور والأزمنة، الأهوية والرياح والماء، النخيل والنبات ، المعادن ...

وكل كتاب من هذه الكتب يقسم إلى أبواب بعدد ما يحتمل المعنى الأصلي من فروع . وهذه الطريقة شبيهة بطريقة الثعالي قبله في فقه اللغة ، إلا أنها أكثر إحكاماً.
ونظرة واحدة إلى عناوين الفصول التي ذكرناها ترينا كيف ينتقل المؤلف من الإنسان وطباعه وحوائجه إلى الحيوان ، بادئاً بألصق فصائله بالإنسان . فإذا انتهى من الكائنات الحية انتقل إلى الحديث عن السماء والزمان وعوارض الطبيعة والمعادن ... وهكذا إلى آخر الكتاب .
