Sahih al-Bukhari Mahdhuf al-Asanid wa-al-Ahadith al-Mukarrarah

A carefully prepared, streamlined edition of Imām al-Bukhārī’s al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ by the contemporary Syrian scholar Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Aḥmad al-Shāmī, designed to make the Prophetic texts of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī considerably easier to read, study and consult. Rather than being a conventional abridgement that merely selects a portion of al-Bukhārī’s material, the compiler seeks to preserve the substantive contents of the Ṣaḥīḥ while removing the two elements that account for much of its size: the full chains of transmission and repeated occurrences of the same ḥadīth.

Al-Bukhārī famously repeats individual traditions in different chapters, often transmitting them through different chains or with variations in wording in order to derive distinct legal and scholarly benefits. Al-Shāmī brings these dispersed transmissions together so that the reader can encounter the essential text without repeatedly reading the same narration. Where another occurrence contains an additional wording or significant benefit, that material is retained rather than simply discarded. The result provides a convenient route to the Prophetic content of the Ṣaḥīḥ while remaining connected to the arrangement and numbering of the original.

A particularly useful feature is that this edition does not simply discard al-Bukhārī’s muʿallaq narrations. Al-Shāmī includes the aḥādīth muʿallaqah in the margins, while keeping them separate from the sequential numbering of the fully connected Prophetic traditions. He also records the original al-Bukhārī number at the end of each ḥadīth or variant, allowing the reader to return easily to its location in the complete Ṣaḥīḥ.

The referencing system makes the work particularly practical for students. Al-Shāmī makes use of Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī’s numbering, including the references by which the different occurrences or aṭrāf of a single ḥadīth can be located throughout Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. Where a narration is also found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, its Muslim reference number is supplied as well. Thus the book functions not merely as a shortened reading text but as a useful tool for cross-referencing and elementary ḥadīth research.

This format is especially suitable for readers wishing to read through the Prophetic aḥādīth of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī systematically without the extensive repetition and full isnāds of the original, while still retaining the ability to trace each narration back to the complete work. It should nevertheless be distinguished from the original Ṣaḥīḥ: al-Bukhārī’s repetition, differing isnāds, chapter headings and placement of narrations frequently contain important scholarly and juristic indications of their own.
