Tahqiq Masa'il Muhimmat min 'Ilm al-Tawhid wa-al-Sifat

A focused collection of theological studies by the contemporary Ḥanafī scholar Shaykh Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad al-Ghursī, devoted to a selection of important and often disputed questions in ʿilm al-tawḥīd, the divine attributes and Kalām. The author explains in his introduction that the volume originated as a number of separate articles in which he had investigated significant theological questions, subsequently gathering them together into a single work.

Rather than presenting a systematic textbook of creed from beginning to end, the book concentrates upon particular theological problems requiring detailed investigation and clarification. A notable concern is the nature and proper place of ʿilm al-kalām: the author examines the statements transmitted from the Salaf warning against Kalām, the obligation of knowing the evidences for tawḥīd, and the circumstances in which rational theological argument may be necessary or beneficial. In doing so, he seeks to distinguish between legitimate theological reasoning employed in defence and clarification of the faith and forms of speculative argumentation that earlier scholars condemned.

The work is particularly concerned with questions relating to Allah's attributes and the correct principles for understanding theological texts, approaching these discussions from within the traditional Sunni theological heritage. Its method is investigative rather than merely introductory: differing formulations and scholarly positions are examined, arguments are weighed, and the author attempts to establish what he regards as the sound position on issues that have frequently become subjects of polemical disagreement. The book is accordingly classified specifically under Islamic creed and the study of the Divine Names and Attributes.

It is therefore particularly suited to students who already possess a basic grounding in ʿaqīdah and wish to engage with more technical discussions concerning Tawḥīd, Ṣifāt and the methodology of Kalām, especially as these questions are treated within the later Sunni theological tradition. The late South African scholar Shaykh Ṭāhā Karaan included the work among his recommended Arabic reading materials, describing it as a treatment in which al-Ghursī investigates a number of questions pertaining to tawḥīd and the attributes.
