Fayd al-Khabir wa Khulasat al-Taqrir ala Nahj al-Taysir

Fayḍ al-Khabīr wa Khulāṣat al-Taqrīr ʿalā Nahj al-Taysīr Sharḥ Manẓūmat al-Tafsīr (فيض الخبير وخلاصة التقرير على نهج التيسير شرح منظومة التفسير) is a valuable multi-layered study text on Uṣūl al-Tafsīr and ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān, bringing together the contributions of several distinguished scholars in a single volume.

At its foundation is the celebrated Manẓūmat al-Tafsīr of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Zamzamī al-Makkī al-Shāfiʿī, a concise didactic poem presenting important principles and categories of Qurʾānic interpretation. This is accompanied by Nahj al-Taysīr, the commentary of Sayyid Muḥsin ibn ʿAlī al-Musāwī al-Ḥaḍramī (d. 1354 AH), which explains the verses and elucidates their technical terminology and intended meanings.

Upon this commentary is the valuable ḥāshiyah entitled Fayḍ al-Khabīr wa Khulāṣat al-Taqrīr, by the renowned Makkan scholar Sayyid ʿAlawī ibn ʿAbbās al-Mālikī al-Ḥasanī (d. 1391 AH). His annotations further clarify, supplement and develop the discussions of Nahj al-Taysīr. The volume is then enriched by a second layer of marginal annotations by Shaykh Muḥammad Yāsīn al-Fādānī al-Makkī (d. 1410 AH). Thus, the reader encounters four interconnected scholarly layers: al-Zamzamī’s poem, al-Musāwī’s commentary, ʿAlawī al-Mālikī’s ḥāshiyah, and al-Fādānī’s additional annotations.

Together these works provide a compact but substantial treatment of the principles and sciences required for understanding Tafsīr, including the various categories of revelation and numerous linguistic, textual and interpretive principles employed by the mufassir. The progression from concise verse to commentary and then to two levels of scholarly annotation makes the volume particularly useful for structured study, allowing the student to begin with the fundamental principles of the Manẓūmah and progressively engage with fuller explanations, qualifications and supplementary observations.

An especially useful work for students of ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān, Uṣūl al-Tafsīr and the traditional Islamic curriculum, combining a well-known didactic poem with three successive layers of explanation by later scholars.
