A major classical commentary on the Qurʾān by the eminent Andalusian Mālikī scholar Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq ibn Ghālib ibn ʿAṭiyyah al-Andalusī (481–541 AH). Born in Granada into a distinguished scholarly family, Ibn ʿAṭiyyah travelled extensively throughout al-Andalus in pursuit of knowledge and became accomplished in Tafsīr, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Arabic language and literature. He later served as a judge and was recognised by subsequent scholars for the breadth of his learning and the strength of his scholarship.
Al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz occupies an important position in the development of Andalusian Tafsīr, combining tafsīr bi’l-maʾthūr with careful linguistic and analytical interpretation. Ibn ʿAṭiyyah drew particularly upon the earlier commentaries of al-Ṭabarī, al-Naqqāsh, al-Mahdawī and Makkī ibn Abī Ṭālib, while also benefiting from Mālikī and Ashʿarī scholarship in questions of Fiqh and theology. Its influence upon later Qurʾānic commentary was considerable: al-Qurṭubī, Ibn Juzayy and Abū Ḥayyān all drew extensively from it, while al-Thaʿālibī later produced al-Jawāhir al-Ḥisān as a concise adaptation of Ibn ʿAṭiyyah’s tafsīr.
As its title indicates, Ibn ʿAṭiyyah deliberately sought precision together with concision. In his introduction he explains that he would restrict himself to matters directly relevant to understanding the verse, avoiding unnecessary digressions. A distinctive feature of his method is his orderly, often word-by-word analysis of the Qurʾānic text. He generally gives priority to explaining the Qurʾān through the Qurʾān itself, followed by Prophetic ḥadīths and then the interpretations of the Ṣaḥābah and Tābiʿūn, critically comparing or reconciling differing reports where necessary.
The work is especially distinguished by Ibn ʿAṭiyyah’s mastery of Arabic language and grammar. He pays close attention to vocabulary, Naḥw and the linguistic implications of Qurʾānic expressions, frequently adducing Arabic poetry as evidence. Fiqh is also discussed where relevant, with the positions of different schools recorded and evaluated; although Ibn ʿAṭiyyah’s Mālikī background is evident, legal discussion does not dominate the commentary. He likewise exercises considerable restraint concerning Isrāʾīliyyāt, generally avoiding such reports and at times critically examining those that he does cite.
The result is a commentary renowned for combining transmitted Tafsīr, linguistic precision, critical analysis and concision. Its enormous influence upon subsequent Andalusian and wider Sunni exegesis makes al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz an important reference for advanced students of Tafsīr, Qurʾānic Arabic and the historical development of Qurʾānic interpretation.
