Risalah fi Wujuh al-Fadl wa-al-Mufadalah bayna al-Sahabah wa-Man Ja'a Ba'dahum

A critically edited treatise by the great Andalusian scholar Imām Ibn Ḥazm al-Andalusī (d. 456 AH) dealing with the question of virtue and relative excellence (al-faḍl wa’l-mufāḍalah) among the Companions and those who came after them. This independent edition was published by Dār Ibn Ḥazm in 2012.

Ibn Ḥazm begins by surveying the differing views held by the early Muslim schools concerning who was the most virtuous of the Ummah after the Prophets, transmitting positions attributed to the Ṣaḥābah, Tābiʿūn, jurists and various theological groups. From there he examines the principles by which superiority should be determined, engaging with questions concerning the relative merits of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, ʿAlī and other eminent Companions, and discussing the evidence advanced for the different positions.

The treatise is particularly interesting for Ibn Ḥazm's attempt to distinguish the different forms and causes of excellence, rather than treating virtue as a single undifferentiated quality. His discussion extends beyond the immediate ranking of the Companions to broader questions concerning how the excellence of individuals and generations is to be understood and assessed.

The present publication is based on the scholarly study and critical edition prepared by Dr. Yāsir Muḥammad Yāsīn al-Badrī al-Ḥusaynī as his doctoral research. The treatise survives independently in manuscript form while also corresponding to material transmitted within Ibn Ḥazm's al-Fiṣal fī al-Milal wa’l-Ahwāʾ wa’l-Niḥal, making this edition particularly useful for the study of this distinct portion of Ibn Ḥazm's intellectual legacy.
