Sharh al-Tibi 'ala Mishkat al-Masabih: al-Kashif 'an Haqa'iq al-Sunan

A monumental classical commentary on Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ by the distinguished scholar Sharaf al-Dīn al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭībī (d. 743 AH / 1343 CE). Entitled al-Kāshif ʿan Ḥaqāʾiq al-Sunan, it ranks among the most extensive and important commentaries written on al-Khaṭīb al-Tabrīzī’s celebrated collection of Prophetic traditions, and became an important source for later commentators on the Mishkāt.

The underlying Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ is itself an expanded and reorganised version of Imām al-Baghawī’s Maṣābīḥ al-Sunnah. Al-Tabrīzī supplemented al-Baghawī’s collection by identifying the Companion narrators and the Ḥadīth sources, while adding further traditions. Al-Ṭībī then subjected this rich collection to detailed explanation, producing a commentary encompassing Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Arabic language, theology, ethics and spiritual instruction.

A particular strength of al-Ṭībī’s commentary is his command of the Arabic linguistic and rhetorical sciences. He explains difficult and unusual vocabulary, analyses problematic grammatical constructions and pays close attention to the rhetorical structure and subtleties of Prophetic expression. His explanations frequently move beyond the immediate lexical meaning to uncover the relationship between expressions within a ḥadīth and the finer implications of its wording. This linguistic-rhetorical dimension is especially significant given al-Ṭībī’s recognised expertise in Arabic rhetoric and his celebrated commentary on al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf. Examples throughout the Kāshif demonstrate his characteristic concern with deriving precise meanings from individual expressions.

The work is equally rich in juristic and theological discussion. Al-Ṭībī records the interpretations of earlier scholars and the legal rulings derived from the traditions, while also addressing questions of creed and other doctrinal matters arising from the texts. Alongside these technical discussions are numerous spiritual observations, ethical lessons and subtle indications (laṭāʾif wa-ishārāt), giving the commentary a breadth that extends considerably beyond conventional Ḥadīth annotation.

Because of this combination of linguistic precision, Fiqh, theology and attention to the deeper significance of Prophetic language, al-Kāshif ʿan Ḥaqāʾiq al-Sunan became an important link in the commentarial tradition of the Mishkāt. It is particularly valuable for advanced students and researchers who wish to study the traditions not merely in translation or brief explanation, but through the interconnected disciplines traditionally employed by Muslim scholars to understand the Sunnah.
