Commonly known as Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī, al-Jāmiʿ li-Aḥkām al-Qurʾān is the celebrated Qurʾānic commentary of the Andalusian Mālikī scholar Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī al-Qurṭubī (d. 671 AH). Al-Qurṭubī was trained in Ḥadīth, Fiqh, theology, Arabic literature and grammar in his native Córdoba before relocating to Egypt following the fall of the city in 633 AH. Although the title of his tafsīr emphasises the legal rulings of the Qurʾān, the work is in reality a wide-ranging encyclopaedic commentary encompassing numerous branches of Qurʾānic scholarship.

Al-Qurṭubī generally treats a verse or group of related verses under a series of numbered masāʾil, through which he examines the various questions arising from the passage. Particular prominence is given to Fiqh and Āyāt al-Aḥkām: he records the positions of the jurists and their evidences, frequently extending his discussion beyond the four madhhabs. Although himself a Mālikī, he does not invariably defend his school, but critically compares the arguments and at times prefers a position contrary to the Mālikī view when he considers its evidence stronger.

The commentary is equally rich in Ḥadīth, Arabic language and Qirāʾāt. Al-Qurṭubī gathers relevant narrations, generally attributes them to their sources and occasionally evaluates their authenticity with reference to the authorities of al-Jarḥ wa’l-Taʿdīl. His linguistic discussions encompass vocabulary, Naḥw, Ṣarf and Balāghah, with Arabic poetry frequently cited as evidence. He also records variant Qurʾānic readings, attributes them to their transmitters and discusses their significance and strength.

A major source for the work was Ibn ʿAṭiyyah’s al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz, though al-Qurṭubī draws upon a much broader body of earlier scholarship. His method combines tafsīr bi’l-maʾthūr and analytical tafsīr, while deliberately avoiding the accumulation of lengthy historical tales and stories characteristic of some earlier commentaries, replacing much of this material with legal deductions, Qirāʾāt, iʿrāb and discussions of abrogation. The work subsequently became an important source for later mufassirūn, including Ibn Kathīr and al-Shawkānī.

The result is one of the great comprehensive works of classical Tafsīr: particularly renowned for Qurʾānic legal rulings, yet valuable far beyond Fiqh for its treatment of Ḥadīth, linguistic analysis, Qirāʾāt and comparative interpretation. Its combination of transmitted scholarship with critical juristic reasoning makes Tafsīr al-Qurṭubī an indispensable reference for advanced students of the Qurʾān and Islamic law.

This is the best print, an extensive critical edition prepared under the supervision of Dr. ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muḥsin al-Turkī.
It was established through comparison with seven manuscripts and supplements the text with sourcing of aḥādīth and poetry, explanations of difficult expressions and brief biographical annotations. (Summarised from the excellent introduction to tafsir series by al-Ma’rifah Centre)
