Musnad al-Imam Ahmad

The monumental Ḥadīth collection of Imām Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥanbal al-Shaybānī (164–241 AH), one of the largest and most important surviving compilations of Prophetic traditions from the formative period of Ḥadīth scholarship. The Musnad contains approximately 28,000 numbered narrations, with a considerably larger total when repeated routes and variants are counted, preserving an immense body of material concerning belief, worship, law, manners, virtues, history, tafsīr and the life of the Prophet ﷺ.

As a musnad, the work is arranged primarily according to the Companions who narrated the aḥādīth, rather than according to subjects or chapters of Fiqh. It begins with the narrations of the ten Companions promised Paradise, followed by other prominent Companions and larger groupings. This arrangement preserves the ḥadīth corpus associated with individual Ṣaḥābah and makes the work particularly important for the study of isnāds, variant routes of transmission and the individual musnads of the Companions.

The work reached subsequent generations principally through Imām Aḥmad's son ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad (d. 290 AH). The transmitted Musnad includes the material he heard from his father together with additional narrations that he himself incorporated from his own teachers; the later transmission also contains a smaller body of additions associated with the transmitter Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī. The extensive introduction to this edition studies these textual layers and the history of the transmission of the Musnad in detail.

This celebrated edition supervised by Shaykh Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾūṭ represents one of the most extensive modern scholarly projects undertaken on the Musnad. The text was critically prepared by a large team of researchers, with Shuʿayb al-Arnaʾūṭ and ʿĀdil Murshid heading the editorial work and Dr. ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muḥsin al-Turkī exercising overall supervision.

Its value lies particularly in the extensive takhrīj and ḥadīth criticism accompanying virtually every narration. The editors trace reports to parallel sources, identify corroborating and supporting routes, discuss narrators and defects in the chains, compare variant wordings, and provide assessments such as ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, ḍaʿīf or judgments upon the strength of the isnād. The annotations therefore transform the edition into a major research resource for studying the transmission and authenticity of the individual reports, rather than merely presenting a corrected text of the Musnad. Examples throughout the edition show the editors tracing individual traditions through numerous other Ḥadīth collections and commenting specifically upon the reliability of their transmitters.

The original Muʾassasat al-Risālah scholarly edition was issued in 50 volumes, the final five volumes being devoted to indexes, and is commonly cited as the first edition of 1421 AH / 2001 CE. The later Dār al-Risālah al-ʿĀlamiyyah issue specified here has been expanded physically to 52 hardback volumes while retaining the Arnaʾūṭ editorial work. Current bibliographical records list a fourth edition in 2021 and a fifth edition in 1444 AH / 2023, printed on cream paper.

For serious students and researchers of Ḥadīth, this is consequently one of the most useful modern editions of Musnad Aḥmad, combining the vast original collection with detailed source referencing, isnād criticism, authenticity judgments and comprehensive indexes.
