Ta'lim al-Muta'allim li-Targhib Talib al-'Ilm: Targhib al-Muta'allimin

The Islamic Sharīʿah has accorded knowledge immense importance. The first verse revealed of the Noble Qur’an was a clear and explicit call to knowledge, demonstrating that Islam is a religion of knowledge and facts, not a religion of ignorance and superstition.

The Muslim understands that this call to knowledge does not come without reason. Had knowledge not possessed such tremendous value and lofty status, we would not have found it given such prominence in the Islamic Sharīʿah, nor such repeated encouragement to adhere to it.

It was for this reason that Shaykh Abū al-Layth al-Qasṭamūnī al-Ḥanafī, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote Taʿlīm al-Mutaʿallim li-Targhīb Ṭālib al-ʿIlm, to encourage people to seek knowledge and urge them to act upon it, and to serve as an aid and assistance in the pursuit of knowledge and as a guide and instructor for its students. Despite the book’s small size, it is of immense benefit and great usefulness, containing the very essence of the essence.
