Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm wa-Fadlihi

Jāmiʿ Bayān al-ʿIlm wa Faḍlih (جامع بيان العلم وفضله) by Imām Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr al-Qurṭubī (d. 463 AH) is a major classical work devoted to sacred knowledge, its virtues, its acquisition and the proper conduct of scholars and students.

Drawing extensively upon Qurʾānic verses, Prophetic ḥadīths, reports from the Companions and early generations, and the sayings of leading scholars, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr discusses the excellence of knowledge and its people, the obligation and methods of seeking knowledge, travelling for study, transmitting and recording ḥadīth, and the etiquette of teaching and learning.

The work also addresses important questions concerning taqlīd and following scholarly authority, ijtihād, disagreement among scholars, sound reasoning and disputation, while warning against knowledge pursued without sincerity or proper practice. It is both an important source for the intellectual and educational traditions of early Islam and a rich collection of guidance on the ethics and methodology of Islamic scholarship.
