al-Risalah fi Tahqiq al-'Ilm wa-al-Ma'lum

A distinguished collection of treatises devoted to the philosophical discussion of knowledge and the known. Bringing together the views of both earlier and later scholars, it offers a thorough investigation of these subjects with careful analysis, elegant presentation, and refined expression.

Among the treatises included in this volume are discussions on the views of the philosophers regarding the reality of knowledge; the question of mental existence together with an examination of the theologians' denial of it; responses to the objections raised against mental existence; an investigation of the Peripatetic theory that essential unity is the cause of cognition; an analysis of the proofs for mental existence; a study of Ibn Sīnā's objection concerning the intelligibility of substances and the question of how one thing may be both substance and accident; the responses of al-Sayyid al-Ṣadr al-Shīrāzī, al-Muḥaqqiq al-Dawwānī, Shams al-Khafrī, and others, together with the critique of al-Fāḍil al-Khayrābādī; and an investigation establishing that knowledge is a positive existential reality and not merely the removal of one thing from another.

The volume contains many other valuable treatises and has been critically edited by Ghulām Ḥaydar al-Khayrābādī.
