Majmu Rasa'il al-Allamah Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali

An extensive collection bringing together forty-eight treatises of the eminent Ḥanbalī jurist, muḥaddith and scholar Zayn al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī (736–795 AH). Published in eight volumes, the collection displays the remarkable breadth of Ibn Rajab’s scholarship, with writings spanning Tafsīr, Ḥadīth and its sciences, creed, Fiqh, spiritual refinement, ethics, admonition and other areas of Islamic learning.

The diversity of these writings highlights a characteristic feature of Ibn Rajab’s scholarship: the close relationship between ḥadīth, jurisprudence and spiritual instruction. Some treatises investigate specialised questions of law or Prophetic tradition, while others explain Qurʾānic passages and ḥadīths or address sincerity, the heart, worship, death and the Hereafter. Throughout these different subjects, Ibn Rajab draws extensively upon the Qurʾān, Sunnah and reports of the early generations, combining careful transmission and legal analysis with practical religious and ethical instruction.

This substantial Dār al-Lubāb edition represents a major effort to collect and critically establish Ibn Rajab’s scattered shorter writings. Dr. Muḥammad Mujīr al-Khaṭīb al-Ḥasanī undertook the critical editing of the majority of the collection, working from manuscript copies gathered from different collections and tracing its extensive body of ḥadīths, reports, quotations and poetry. Other treatises in the set were critically edited by additional researchers. The project reportedly involved nearly eight years of manuscript collection, comparison and textual verification, and is preceded by an extensive 212-page introductory study examining Ibn Rajab’s life, writings and scholarly methodology in Tafsīr, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Uṣūl and related disciplines.

It is an especially valuable collection for readers wishing to explore Ibn Rajab beyond his larger and better-known works, bringing a considerable body of his shorter, specialised and devotional writings together in a single critically edited edition.
