One of the most celebrated classical works on Islamic spirituality, purification of the soul and the cultivation of sincerity, composed by the eminent Egyptian Mālikī scholar and Ṣūfī master Tāj al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh al-Iskandarī (d. 709 AH). Commonly known as al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyyah, this collection of concise spiritual aphorisms has occupied an important position in the Islamic scholarly and spiritual tradition for more than seven centuries.
Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh was among the foremost representatives of the Shādhilī tradition of Taṣawwuf, having studied under Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Mursī, the principal disciple of Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī. His Ḥikam distils profound observations concerning the relationship between the servant and Allah, the purification of the heart, the dangers of spiritual complacency and the proper understanding of worship, divine decree and reliance upon Allah.
The work consists of a series of brief but remarkably concentrated statements, many of which express complex spiritual principles in only a sentence or two. Its opening aphorism is particularly famous:
مِنْ عَلَامَاتِ الِاعْتِمَادِ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ نُقْصَانُ الرَّجَاءِ عِنْدَ وُجُودِ الزَّلَلِ
“Among the signs of relying upon one's deeds is the diminishing of hope when one falls into error.”
This statement introduces one of the central themes of the work: the distinction between performing righteous deeds and placing one's ultimate reliance upon those deeds, rather than upon the mercy and grace of Allah.
Throughout the collection, Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh returns to the relationship between human effort and divine favour, examining how sincerity, humility and awareness of one's dependence upon Allah should accompany outward religious observance.
Other recurring subjects include Tawakkul, Riḍā, Ikhlāṣ, Tawbah, Dhikr, spiritual vigilance, gratitude, patience and the dangers of ostentation and self-admiration. The author also explores the relationship between outward religious practice and inward spiritual states, the distinction between attachment to worldly means and legitimate engagement with them, and the different stages through which a person may progress in seeking closeness to Allah.
The literary character of al-Ḥikam is another reason for its enduring influence. Its aphorisms are distinguished by concise expression, rhetorical balance, subtle contrasts and profound spiritual observations, inviting careful reflection rather than hurried reading. The work has consequently attracted an extensive commentary tradition, with major explanations written by scholars such as Ibn ʿAbbād al-Rundī, Aḥmad Zarrūq, Ibn ʿAjībah and others. These commentaries examine the meanings of individual aphorisms and relate them to the Qurʾān, Sunnah and the wider literature of Islamic spirituality.
The Dār al-Taqwā, Damascus edition is particularly noteworthy because it includes an accompanying work entitled:
إشارات وتلويحات سنية من القرآن الكريم والسنة النبوية على معاني الحكم العطائية Ishārāt wa-Talwīḥāt Sunniyyah min al-Qurʾān al-Karīm wa’l-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah ʿalā Maʿānī al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyyah.
This supplementary material draws attention to Qurʾānic and Prophetic teachings relevant to the meanings of the aphorisms, helping readers approach Ibn ʿAṭāʾ Allāh's spiritual observations in relation to the foundational sources of Islam.
Published by Dār al-Taqwā, Damascus, the edition appeared in 1446 AH / 2025 CE. It comprises one hardback volume of 336 pages, printed on cream paper.
Al-Ḥikam al-ʿAṭāʾiyyah is particularly valuable for students of Taṣawwuf, teachers of Islamic spirituality and readers interested in the purification of the heart and the cultivation of sincerity in worship. Its combination of brevity, literary elegance and depth has made it one of the most widely studied works of spiritual counsel in the Islamic tradition, while the additional Qurʾānic and Prophetic references in this edition provide a useful aid to understanding its teachings.
