One of the most comprehensive classical encyclopaedias devoted to the Sīrah, Shamāʾil and distinctive characteristics of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, by the eminent Egyptian Shāfiʿī scholar and historian Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī (d. 942 AH). Commonly known as Subul al-Hudā wa’l-Rashād, the work bears the fuller title Subul al-Hudā wa’l-Rashād fī Sīrat Khayr al-ʿIbād wa-Dhikr Faḍāʾilih wa-Aʿlām Nubuwwatihi wa-Afʿālihi wa-Aḥwālihi fī al-Mabdaʾ wa’l-Maʿād. The work is also commonly known as al-Sīrah al-Shāmiyyah, after its author, al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī.
Unlike shorter biographies that concentrate primarily on the chronological events of the Prophet's ﷺ life, al-Ṣāliḥī conceived his work as an encyclopaedic compilation of virtually every major aspect of the Prophetic Sīrah. He brings together the historical narrative of the Prophet's life, his genealogy and birth, the beginning of revelation, the Makkan and Madinan periods, the military expeditions, his family and Companions, personal habits, physical appearance, manners, virtues, miracles, and the distinctive rulings and qualities associated with his Prophethood.
A defining feature of the work is its extraordinary breadth of source material. Al-Ṣāliḥī drew extensively upon earlier authorities in Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Maghāzī, history, Tafsīr, Shamāʾil and Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah, assembling material that would otherwise have to be sought across numerous large works. His compilation is therefore valuable not merely as a biography but also as a substantial repository of earlier scholarship concerning the Prophet ﷺ.
Al-Ṣāliḥī states that he condensed and assembled his work from more than three hundred earlier books. He also explains that he sought to avoid fabricated narrations. An especially useful aspect of his method is his practice of concluding chapters with discussions clarifying difficult expressions, explaining unusual vocabulary, extracting important scholarly benefits and reconciling reports that might initially appear contradictory. The result combines extensive historical compilation with elements of Ḥadīth commentary and critical analysis.
The organisation of the work reflects its encyclopaedic ambitions. Its earlier sections discuss the Prophet's ﷺ ancestry, birth, names, physical appearance, early life and mission. These are followed by detailed accounts of the Hijrah, the major battles and expeditions, delegations and other events of the Madinan period. Substantial later sections examine his worship, supplications, personal conduct, miracles, distinctive legal rulings, family relationships and everyday life. Some chapters address remarkably specific aspects of his habits and circumstances, making the book an unusually detailed resource for the study of the Prophetic Shamāʾil.
The Dār al-Kutub al-ʿIlmiyyah, Beirut edition has been critically edited and annotated by Shaykh ʿĀdil Aḥmad ʿAbd al-Mawjūd and Shaykh ʿAlī Muḥammad Muʿawwaḍ. The original edition appeared in 1414 AH / 1993 CE, while a later printing is dated 2012. The set comprises 14 large hardback volumes, including two volumes of comprehensive scholarly indexes, which greatly facilitate access to the enormous range of material contained in the work.
Subul al-Hudā wa’l-Rashād is particularly valuable for scholars, teachers, students of Sīrah and researchers of Prophetic Ḥadīth and Shamāʾil. Its importance lies not only in the extraordinary quantity of information it preserves, but also in its systematic arrangement and its incorporation of the observations of earlier scholars, making it one of the most substantial classical reference works devoted to the life, character, virtues and Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Sorry, it's out of stock.
