An important classical work on the Seven Canonical Qurʾānic Readings, written by the Ḥanafī grammarian and Qurʾān-reciter Zayn al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr al-Dimashqī, known as Ibn al-ʿAynī (d. 893 AH). The work is closely connected to Imām al-Shāṭibī’s celebrated Ḥirz al-Amānī wa-Wajh al-Tahānī—universally known as al-Shāṭibiyyah—but is distinctive in that it is not simply a conventional line-by-line commentary upon the poem.

Ibn al-ʿAynī himself explains that his purpose was to compile a concise set of notes on Qirāʾāt, drawn from various commentaries upon al-Shāṭibiyyah, without reproducing the text of the poem itself. He first explains the technical conventions employed by al-Shāṭibī and then follows a structure corresponding closely to the questions and arrangement of the Shāṭibiyyah. The result is therefore best understood as an independent manual elucidating the contents of al-Shāṭibiyyah, rather than merely a running commentary on its verses.

Among the particular strengths of the work is Ibn al-ʿAynī’s attention to tawjīh al-qirāʾāt—explaining the linguistic and grammatical basis of the different canonical readings—in both the general principles (uṣūl) and the individual textual variants (farsh). His background as a scholar of Arabic grammar is especially evident here. At the same time, his explanations are deliberately concise: the work has been praised for its clarity and balance, avoiding both excessive expansion and an abbreviation so severe that the intended meaning becomes obscure.

Another useful feature is that Ibn al-ʿAynī explicitly names the readers and transmitters when explaining points of disagreement, rather than requiring the student continually to decipher al-Shāṭibī’s symbolic system. He also pauses at the beginning of a number of sections to explain important technical terminology and the reasoning behind it—for example, terminology relating to major and minor idghām, madd and qaṣr, and the treatment of hamzah. He occasionally explains why al-Shāṭibī separated particular topics into independent chapters, giving the student insight into the internal organisation of the Shāṭibiyyah itself.

Ḥall al-Shāṭibiyyah is consequently particularly valuable for the serious student of the Seven Qirāʾāt studying al-Shāṭibiyyah. It helps move the reader beyond simply identifying which reader recites a particular word in which manner, towards understanding the terminology, organisation and linguistic reasoning underlying the transmitted variants.

The Dār Ṭaybah al-Khaḍrāʾ, Makkah edition is the first critical edition of the work, prepared by Dr. Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ʿĀlī al-Anṣārī, and originated as his doctoral research. It was published in 1440 AH / 2019 CE in one large hardback volume.
