Tanzih al-Qur'an 'an al-Mata'in

A classical work of Qurʾānic exegesis and theological interpretation by the prominent Muʿtazilī theologian al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Aḥmad al-Hamadhānī al-Asadābādī (d. 415 AH). The work is particularly concerned with explaining passages of the Qurʾān that had been subjected to objections or whose apparent meanings might raise theological, linguistic or interpretive difficulties.

Following the order of the sūrahs, al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār selects verses requiring explanation rather than providing a continuous commentary on every verse. He addresses questions concerning apparently ambiguous or problematic expressions, distinguishes between muḥkam and mutashābih passages, and seeks to demonstrate the consistency of Qurʾānic discourse while answering erroneous interpretations and objections directed against it. In his introduction, he explains that understanding the Qurʾān requires grasping its meanings and correctly distinguishing its clear passages from those requiring interpretation.
