Bahjat al-Insan fi Muhjat al-Hayawan

Just printed for the first time, this is Mulla Ali Qari's mukhtasar of the famous book Hayat al-Hayawan.

"Bahjat al-Insan is regarded as one of the outstanding abridgements of al-Damiri’s Hayat al-Hayawan. The author abridged the original in a manner befitting the work, while giving his abridgement a distinctive character that sets it apart from others. He did not merely summarise Hayat al-Hayawan, but also adopted a critical approach towards its contents, critiquing statements found in the original at a number of places and explaining the reasons for his criticism.

The author condensed the material relating to some of the animals mentioned by al-Damiri. At times this involved abridging the information provided about a particular animal, while at others he confined himself to the animal’s commonly used names, omitting those that were less well known.

Al-Damiri generally organised his treatment of each animal under the following headings: legal rulings, proverbs, special properties and dream interpretation. The author follows the same general method in an abridged form, retaining the sections on legal rulings and proverbs, omitting dream interpretation, and including the discussion of special properties only occasionally.

The animals are arranged alphabetically according to the letters of the Arabic alphabet. When necessary, the author begins by indicating the correct vocalisation and pronunciation of the animal’s name, followed by a linguistic definition. He then cites references to it from the Qur’an and Sunnah, as well as accounts and traditions of the Arabs.

After providing an ample selection of such references, he discusses the ruling on consuming the animal according to the four schools of Islamic law, presenting the evidence of each school.

The result is a work rich in valuable and unusual benefits, useful to beginners and advanced scholars alike—or, as the author himself states, a book that neither “those at the beginnings” nor “the masters of the advanced stages” can afford to be without."

يُعدُّ كتابُ «بَهجة الإنسان» من المختصَرات المتميِّزة لكتاب «حياة الحيَوان» للدَّميريِّ، حيث اختصرَه اختصاراً يليقُ به، وميَّزَه عن ‏غيره من المختصَرات، وذلك أنَّ مؤلِّفَه لم يكن مختصِراً فحسب، بل كان له دورُ النَّاقدِ لما يختَصِرُه من «حياة الحيَوان»، حيث نقد ما ‏وَرد فيه في أكثرَ من موضعٍ، وبيَّن وعلَّل ذلك.وقد اختصر المؤلِّفُ بعضَ الحيَوانات الواردةِ عند الدَّميريِّ، وذلك إمَّا اختصاراً للحيَوانات المذكورة فيه، وإمَّا ‏اعتمادًا على الأسماء المشتهِرة للحيَوان الواحد دونَ غير المشتهِرة. ‏
واعتمد الدَّميريُّ في كتابه التفصيلَ الآتي: (الحُكم ـ الأمثال ـ الخَواصّ ـ التَّعبير)، فمشى المؤلِّف ‏على منهجه مختصِرًا، فذكر (الحُكم والأمثال)، وأهملَ (التَّعبيرَ)، وذكرَ (الخواصَّ) في بعض الأحيان القليلة.‏
ورتَّبَ الحيَوانات على حسَب الترتيب الهِجائي لحُروف اللُّغة العربيَّة، وكان أوَّل ما يبدأُ بضبط اسمِ الحيوانِ إن أَشكل، ثمَّ بالتَّعريف به لغويًّا، ثمَّ يذكر ‏الشَّواهدَ له من الكتاب والسُّنَّة وقِصص العرب.‏
‏وبعدَ إشباعِه بالشَّواهد يذكر حُكمَ أكلِه على #المذاهب_الاربعة مع الاستدلال لكلٍّ واحدٍ منهم فكان بحقٍّ كتابًا مليئًا بالفوائد والفرائد، ولا يستغني عنه أصحابُ البدايات، ولا أربابُ النِّهايات كما قال المؤلِّف فيه.‏
