The book presents a study of the life of the fourth of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Imam ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, distinguishing between two periods of his life. The first was during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, covering his upbringing, acceptance of Islam, and marriage. The second was during the reigns of the three caliphs before him, may Allah be pleased with them, and his role during the caliphate of each one of them.
The book then examines his pledge of allegiance, his assumption of the caliphate, and his most important qualities, focusing on the financial and judicial institutions during his reign and his juristic ijtihād.
It then examines the provinces of the state, their governors, and their powers, before moving on to the critical period of his caliphate, the Battles of the Camel and Ṣiffīn, the issue of arbitration, and his position towards the Khārijites and the Shīʿah, continuing until the end of his blessed life, which concluded with his martyrdom, together with the lessons and reflections to be drawn from these events.
