Asbab al-Nuzul lil-Wahidi

A foundational classical work on the occasions and circumstances of Qurʾānic revelation (Asbāb al-Nuzūl) by the renowned Shāfiʿī exegete and linguist Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Wāḥidī al-Naysābūrī (d. 468 AH). It is one of the principal early works devoted specifically to this branch of Qurʾānic studies and became an important source for later mufassirūn and authors writing on the occasions of revelation.

Al-Wāḥidī proceeds according to the order of the Qurʾānic sūrahs, identifying verses for which a particular incident, question or historical circumstance is reported as having occasioned their revelation. The work contains reports concerning more than 470 incidents and circumstances of revelation, which al-Wāḥidī generally transmits through his chains of narration from the Companions and other early authorities.
