Ikmal al-Mu'lim bi-Fawa'id Muslim wa-Ma'ahu Rijal Sahih Muslim

One of the great classical commentaries on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, authored by the celebrated Mālikī jurist, ḥadīth scholar and judge Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ ibn Mūsā al-Yaḥṣubī al-Sabtī (476–544 AH), author of al-Shifāʾ. Ikmāl al-Muʿlim bi-Fawāʾid Muslim occupies an especially important place in the early commentarial tradition of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and became a major source for later commentators, including Imām al-Nawawī.

The title Ikmāl al-Muʿlim reflects the work's relationship with al-Muʿlim bi-Fawāʾ Muslim of Imām Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Māzarī (d. 536 AH). Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ builds upon al-Māzarī's earlier commentary, supplementing, correcting and substantially expanding its discussions. His work consequently preserves a particularly valuable stage in the development of the scholarly commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and itself became the foundation for later works such as al-Ubayy's Ikmāl Ikmāl al-Muʿlim.

The commentary combines Ḥadīth scholarship with Fiqh, Arabic language and the clarification of difficult passages. Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ discusses variant transmissions and problematic expressions, explains unfamiliar vocabulary and names, and addresses questions concerning narrators and the wording of individual reports. At the same time, he draws out the legal implications of the aḥādīth and records the positions of the jurists, with particular attention to the Mālikī school and its authorities. The result is considerably more than a straightforward explanation of the text: it is an important source for the early interpretation and juristic reception of Muslim's Ṣaḥīḥ.

This Dār al-Kutub al-ʿIlmiyyah edition is particularly extensive. In addition to Ikmāl al-Muʿlim, the publisher includes Tanbīh al-Muʿallim bi-Mubhamāt Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Sibṭ Ibn al-ʿAjamī, a work devoted to identifying persons left unnamed or ambiguous in the narrations of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. The introductory material also incorporates Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ's al-Ghunyah, his catalogue of teachers, together with ʿIlal al-Aḥādīth fī Kitāb al-Ṣaḥīḥ of Abū al-Faḍl Ibn ʿAmmār al-Shahīd. Thus the set brings together several useful works surrounding Muslim, its narrators and Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ's scholarly legacy.
