The famous Hikam of the Sufi Master, Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari is known to all. Each line of this masterpiece is filled with wisdom and lessons, due to which dozens of shuruh have been authored on it.

This commentary is by the well-known Syrian scholar of the recent past, Sh Muhammad Sa’id Ramadan al-Buti. He was a master in ulum aqliyyah, a great thinker and an aqidah expert. While I was blessed with attending a number of his lessons during my visits to Syria, there were many times when most of the lesson was just too high-level for me to properly understand.

His lessons on the Hikam are different. Not only did he bring the language of these lessons down to the level of the layman, but he also filled them with examples and advice that we could relate to.
I listened to recordings of all these lessons about 2 decades ago and was amazed by his insight. A point that really stuck with me was the shaykh explaining the harms of television and announcing that he would never allow a TV into his home. This was a surprise, coming from a shaykh who would appear regularly on TV. So, while he could appear on it, he was vocal against its harms and would speak out against bringing it into one’s home. I don’t know whether his view on this changed later in his life though.
