Tahriz al-Tanzih wa-Tahrir al-Tashbih

How can Allah Most High be described metaphorically when the scholars of legal theory have established that His essential attributes are necessary, and that which is necessary can only be literal?

If the way of the Salaf is acknowledged by everyone to be correct, then why not dispense with the way of the Khalaf in order to unite the Muslims? Is it conceivable that the Lawgiver would address us with words whose meaning cannot be understood?

The answers to these questions and related matters are to be found in the introduction to this exceptional work, Taḥrīz al-Tanzīh wa-Taḥrīr al-Tashbīh, which the eminent Mālikī scholar Ibn al-Munayyir al-Iskandarī devoted to a precise examination of the causes behind the emergence of the twin errors of taʿṭīl and tashbīh, and to establishing the principles governing taʾwīl.

In order to extend the principles governing taʾwīl to every scriptural text, even when it is not among the ambiguous texts, the work Al-Qānūn al-Kullī fī al-Taʾwīl by Ḥujjat al-Islām al-Ghazālī has also been appended, accompanied by annotations imbued with al-Ghazālī’s principles of legal theory, which virtually constitute a supplement to the work and a completion of its discussion.
