A substantial contemporary commentary on Sūrat Yāsīn by the Turkish scholar and mufassir Muḥammad al-Kursī al-Mūshī, composed particularly in the light of the celebrated Rasāʾil al-Nūr (Risale-i Nur) of Bediüzzaman Said Nursi (d. 1960). The work has an interesting origin: Nursi had expressed his hope of composing twenty-five interpretive observations (nukat) on twenty-five verses of Sūrat Yāsīn, but stated that the appropriate time for writing them had not yet arrived. He passed away before completing the proposed work, and al-Mūshī undertook this tafsīr with the aim of pursuing that unrealised project through Nursi’s wider Qurʾānic thought.
Al-Mūshī therefore does not merely produce a general commentary on the sūrah. He makes extensive use of Rasāʾil al-Nūr as a source of Qurʾānic reflection and interpretation, weaving its discussions into his explanation of Yāsīn while also gathering what he considers the strongest interpretations of earlier mufassirūn. The resulting work combines the classical tafsīr tradition with the distinctive theological and contemplative approach found in Nursi’s writings.
The commentary follows a clearly defined methodology. For each passage the author examines the relationship of the verse or verses to what precedes them, analyses significant vocabulary and its meanings, and discusses the rhetorical and literary features of the Qurʾānic expression. A particularly prominent concern throughout the book is the Qurʾānic doctrine of bodily resurrection (al-ḥashr al-jismānī): al-Mūshī examines how the verses of Sūrat Yāsīn establish resurrection both through their explicit wording and through their broader meanings, while answering objections which restrict resurrection to the soul without the body. The publisher accordingly describes this theme as the central axis around which much of the commentary revolves.
The work is thus especially concerned with the great themes for which Sūrat Yāsīn is known—revelation and Prophethood, the signs of divine power in creation, death and renewed life, resurrection, and the realities of the Hereafter—but approaches them through detailed linguistic, rhetorical and theological analysis informed by the Risale-i Nur. This makes it particularly relevant to readers interested not only in the tafsīr of Sūrat Yāsīn, but also in Qurʾānic argumentation concerning resurrection and the exegetical thought of Said Nursi.
The Arabic edition was translated from Turkish by Bilāl Özel (بلال أوزل) and Aḥmad Bakkūr (أحمد بكور) and published by Dār al-Ghawthānī lil-Dirāsāt al-Qurʾāniyyah in 2023.
