Tahdhib al-Asma' wa-al-Lughat

There are a few works in the Shafi’i madhab that are so special, that even the staunch Hanafi in me has to admit that we have nothing close to them in our madhab and if we did, we wouldn’t stop boasting about them. This is one of them, yet ask Shafi’i ulama and tullab and you might be shocked at how many of them are unaware of this unique work. 

What is so special about it?

Firstly, it is by the Muhaqqiq and authority in the Shafi’i madhab, Allamah Nawawi; the Wali of Allah who secured divine acceptance for nearly anything his pen produced.

Secondly, it is a biographical dictionary of every person mentioned in 6 major shafi’i works, giving a bio of each person, in addition to connected fawaid. He also often specifies exactly which chapter in each of these books this person was mentioned in.

We Hanafis have many fuqaha mentioned in our works for whom we can barely find more than their names. For some, we don’t
even have their full names! Here, the Muhaqqiq of your madhab has authored a book telling you exactly who each person is and giving you a full bio for him. He even throws in some freebies in the form of fawaid lughawiyyah etc.

 Thirdly, he devoted the second part of the book to a dictionary of fiqhi terms and names of places appearing in these 6 books.

 The first 2 volumes cover the biographical portion, while the 3rd volume is the dictionary. The 4th volume consists of a number of indexes. 

The book is comprehensive, well-researched, authoritative,
user-friendly and filled with fawaid. What more could one ask for?

 This is the new, best print of the book. The original tahqiq by Sh Abduh Ali Kushak was found to be lacking, thus it was revised using multiple manuscripts by Abd ar-Rahim Yusufan. It is expertly-edited and filled with beneficial footnotes and takhrij.

 No self-respecting Shafi’i should be without a copy of this masterpiece. If you aren’t going to benefit from this great book, you might as well become a Hanafi!
