This is a collection of forewords by the author, to dozens of books across a wide range of fields.
"This is a journey through the world of Islamic books—those that have already been published and those awaiting publication. It is a journey that acquaints readers with the contributions of Islamic writers as they explore, investigate, and analyse the fields of history, civilisation, and thought.
Some of these writers are presenting their books for the first time, while others are adding to what they have previously produced. In every case, a serious reading of these books will introduce them and explain what they have added to the Islamic library, whether in terms of methodology or subject matter.
For more than ten years, I have been following what authors present to me, asking me to write introductions to their books. Whenever someone knocked at my door and I saw a bundle of papers in his hand, I knew that he wanted an introduction, and I would recoil somewhat, because this placed upon me more than I could bear. For when you wish to write an introduction to a book, you must read it; otherwise, your arrows will miss their mark, and you will find yourself circling around the subject without saying anything of real significance about it!
After a large collection of these “introductions”—those that had escaped being lost—had accumulated with me, I decided to publish them in a book and divide them into two groups: the first presenting the historical introductions, and the second presenting the intellectual introductions.
The reader will find himself confronted with works that truly deserve to be read, because most of them deal with issues distinguished by novelty of subject and vitality of presentation. For the most part, they are not among those works that treat worn-out subjects about which much has already been said and written; otherwise, I would not have burdened my dear readers with accompanying me on this journey through this garden of varied tastes and colours..."
هذه رحلة في عالم الكتاب الإسلامي ... ما صدر منه وما ينتظر الصدور ...رحلة تطلع القرّاء على معطيات الأقلام الإسلامية وهي تجوس بحثاً وتنقيباً وتحليلاً في حقول التاريخ والحضارة والفكر.بعض هذه الأقلام يتقدم بكتابه لأوّل مرة ... وبعضها الآخر يضيف إلى ما سبق وأن قدّمه ... وفي كل الأحوال فان رحلة القراءة الجادة في هذه الكتب سيعرّف بها ، ويبيّن ما أضافته إلى المكتبة الإسلامية ، سواء على مستوى المنهج أم الموضوع.ومنذ ما يزيد على السنوات العشر وأنا أتابع هذا الذي يعرضه عليّ المؤلفون ... يطلبون مني أن أقدّم لكتبهم ... كلما طرق علي الباب ورأيت في يد الطارق رزمة من الأوراق ، أدركت أنه يريد تقديماً ، فأجفل بعض الشيء ، لأن هذا يحملّني فوق ما أطيق ... فأنت عندما تريد أن تكتب مقدمة لكتاب ما ، عليك أن تقرأه ... وإلاّ طاشت بك السهام ورحت تدور حول الموضوع دون أن تقول فيه أو عنه ، شيئاً ذا بال !!وبعد أن تجمع لدي حشد كبير من هذه ( المقدّمات ) مما لم يتعرض للضياع ارتأيت أن أنشرها في كتاب ، وأن أوزّعها على مجموعتين تعرض أولاهما للمقدمات التاريخية ، وتمضي ثانيتهما لعرض المقدمات الفكرية .ولسوف يجد القارئ نفسه بازاء مؤلفات تستحق القراءة فعلاً ، لأنها في معظمها تتناول مسائل تتميز بالجدة في الموضوع والحيوية في الطرح ... فهي- في الأغلب – ليست من تلك التي تعالج موضوعات مستهلكة قيل فيها الكثير وكتب الكثير ، وإلاّ ما كلّفت قرّائي الأعزاء بالرحلة معي عبر هذه الحديقة ذات الطعوم والألوان ...
