Imad al-Din Zanki

There is no doubt that the prominent position occupied by ʿImād al-Dīn Zankī in Islamic history resulted from his efforts to unite most of the Jazīrah and Syria under a single leadership capable of confronting the Crusader threat and working to eliminate it.

To achieve this objective, Zankī pursued systematic political and military measures that made him responsible for a new phase in the jihād against the Crusaders. This phase was distinguished by organisation based upon a strategic vision, whereas previously the local rulers had, with only rare exceptions, fought their enemies in an improvised manner and without comprehensive, carefully considered planning.

This book is a study of the measures Zankī adopted to achieve his objective, a presentation of his personality and achievements on the fronts of both war and peace, and an analysis of the favourable and unfavourable circumstances that surrounded him during his efforts to establish the largest Islamic principality witnessed by the Jazīrah, northern Iraq, and Syria. This state continued to rule for more than a century after him and expanded, during the eras of Nūr al-Dīn Maḥmūd and al-Nāṣir Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn, to encompass Damascus, Jordan, Egypt, the Ḥijāz, and Yemen within a single powerful state, which was destined to crush the invaders in Palestine and liberate Jerusalem.

لاريب أن مكانة (عماد الدين زنكي) الكبيرة في التاريخ الإسلامي ناجمة عن سعيه لجمع معظم بلاد الجزيرة الفراتية. والشام، في ظل قيادة واحدة، تستطيع الوقوف بوجه الخطر الصليبي. وتعمل للقضاء عليه.وقد اتبع زنكي لتحقيق غرضه هذا خطوات سياسية وعسكرية منظمة، جعلته مسؤولاً عن مرحلة جديدة في (الجهاد) ضد الصلبيين، تميزت بالتنظيم الذي يعتمد رؤية (استراتيجية)، بعد أن كان الأمراء المحليون، في الفترة السابقة، يقاتلون أعداءهم ارتجالاً.ودونما تخطيط شامل مدروس، إلا في القليل النادر.وهذا الكتاب دراسة للخطوات التي اتبعها زنكي لتحقيق هدفه، وعرض لشخصيته ومنجزاته على جبهتي الحرب والسلام، وتحليل للظروف الإيجابية والسلبية التي أحاطت به، خلال سعيه لإنشاء أكبر إمارة إسلامية شهدتها الجزيرة الفراتية، وشمالي العراق، والشام، تلك التي استمرت تحكم من بعده أكثر من قرن، وامتدت – زمن نورالدين محمود والناصر صلاح الدين- لكي تضم دمشق والأردن ومصر والحجاز واليمن، في دولة قوية واحدة، قدر لها أن تسحق الغزاة في فلسطين، وتحرر القدس.
