Mukhtasar al-Fath al-Mawahibi fi Manaqib al-Imam al-Shatibi

A concise classical biography of one of the greatest figures in the history of Qurʾānic recitation, Imām Abū al-Qāsim al-Shāṭibī (538–590 AH), author of the celebrated Ḥirz al-Amānī wa-Wajh al-Tahānī—universally known as al-Shāṭibiyyah. The original biography, al-Fatḥ al-Mawāhibī fī Tarjamat al-Imām al-Shāṭibī, was written by the renowned muḥaddith and Qurʾānic scholar Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Qasṭallānī (851–923 AH), best known for his monumental commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Irshād al-Sārī.

Al-Qasṭallānī’s work is a particularly valuable early source for the life of al-Shāṭibī, whose famous poem became one of the principal teaching texts for the Seven Canonical Qirāʾāt. It gathers material concerning his name and lineage, upbringing and pursuit of knowledge, teachers and students, scholarship in Qirāʾāt, personal virtues and devotion, writings, and his extraordinary standing among the scholars and reciters of the Qurʾān. The biography thus introduces the personality behind al-Shāṭibiyyah and helps students appreciate the scholarly environment from which one of the most influential works in the history of Qirāʾāt emerged.

The book is not limited to bare biographical dates. Al-Qasṭallānī combines historical biography with accounts of al-Shāṭibī's learning, teaching and personal qualities, together with benefits connected to Qurʾānic recitation and the transmission of knowledge. Particularly important is its treatment of al-Shāṭibī’s scholarly legacy and his celebrated Ḥirz al-Amānī, a poem whose influence extended far beyond the author's lifetime and which remains a foundational text in the formal study of the Seven Readings.

The present Mukhtaṣar was abridged and edited by Muḥammad Mūsā al-Sharif, with a foreword by the eminent contemporary master of Qirāʾāt Shaykh Ayman Rushdī Suwayd. Significantly, this abridgement appeared before the complete text of al-Qasṭallānī's work had been published and for a period served as the principal printed means of accessing its biographical material.

For students of al-Shāṭibiyyah and the Seven Qirāʾāt, this is therefore an especially appropriate companion volume: rather than teaching the technical rules of the poem, it acquaints the reader with its author, his teachers and scholarly formation, his character and accomplishments, and the place he came to occupy in the Qirāʾāt tradition.
