Mu'jam al-Mu'allifin

Muʿjam al-Muʾallifīn: Tarājim Muṣannifī al-Kutub al-ʿArabiyyah (معجم المؤلفين: تراجم مصنفي الكتب العربية) by ʿUmar Riḍā Kaḥḥālah (d. 1408 AH/1987 CE) is an extensive bio-bibliographical dictionary of authors who wrote in Arabic, encompassing Arab and non-Arab scholars from the beginnings of Arabic authorship down to the modern period. The author also includes poets and transmitters whose literary or scholarly works were subsequently collected.

Arranged as a convenient reference work, its entries provide such information as an author's full name and dates, scholarly specialities and status, teachers, positions held, and principal writings and other intellectual contributions, with references to the biographical and bibliographical sources used. Its scope extends across the many fields represented in Arabic literature and Islamic scholarship, making it particularly useful for identifying authors, distinguishing similarly named figures, and locating their works.

This Muʾassasat al-Risālah edition was published in four volumes, bringing the large original work into a more compact format. It remains a valuable general reference for Arabic and Islamic biography, bibliography, manuscript research and the identification of classical and modern authors and their works. (Islamweb)
