While it is widely accepted that a scholar without books is like a soldier without weapons, many fail to realise that just as a soldier needs to learn how to use his weapons in the correct manner, similarly scholars need to learn how to use books correctly. A scholar should not only know the major books in each field, but should also be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each book, thereby allowing him to take full benefit from these important tools. While there are many books authored on etiquettes of students and teachers and advices for them, the aspect of which books should be studied in each field isn’t covered in most of these works. This work, Nahj at-Ta’allum, is probably unique in that a significant portion of it is devoted to advising students and scholars on the books to be studied in each field, with the author occasionally discussing positives and negatives of some of these books. This valuable work also covers a wide-range of other important aspects concerning ilm and ulama, further increasing its value.
