Umdat al-Tafsir: Mukhtasar Tafsir al-Quran

A highly regarded abridgement of Ibn Kathīr’s Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm by the eminent Egyptian muḥaddith and textual scholar Shaykh Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir (1309–1377 AH / 1892–1958). The work was conceived as a means of making the essential substance of Ibn Kathīr’s extensive commentary more accessible to the intermediate reader, while preserving its principal exegetical method and Ibn Kathīr’s own conclusions as far as possible.
Aḥmad Shākir retained Ibn Kathīr’s characteristic method of interpreting the Qurʾān through the Qurʾān itself, followed by the authentic Sunnah and the explanations of the early generations. In producing the abridgement, he removed the detailed chains of transmission, generally retaining the name of the Companion narrator and Ibn Kathīr’s attribution of the report; eliminated narrations he judged weak or defective; reduced repetitions among the statements of the Companions and Tābiʿūn; and omitted Isrāʾīliyyāt and other narratives he considered unsuitable for inclusion. Lengthy theological, juristic, linguistic and technical discussions that did not bear directly upon understanding the verse were likewise abbreviated or omitted, while lengthy ḥadīths and historical accounts were often reduced to the portions directly relevant to the interpretation.
The abridgement nevertheless seeks to preserve Ibn Kathīr’s own exegetical positions and preferences, with Aḥmad Shākir endeavouring to retain the wording of the original wherever practicable. The result is not simply a summary of Ibn Kathīr, but a critically selected presentation shaped by Shākir’s expertise in ḥadīth criticism and textual scholarship, concentrating the reader’s attention upon what he regarded as the strongest and most directly relevant material.
An important point concerning the history of the work is that Aḥmad Shākir did not complete its final preparation during his lifetime. The portion that he had fully prepared reached verse 8 of Sūrat al-Anfāl. He had, however, continued working through the remainder of Ibn Kathīr’s Tafsīr in draft form, marking passages for omission and retention. The later complete Dār al-Wafāʾ edition was prepared by Anwar al-Bāz on the basis of these surviving working materials, thereby extending the published abridgement through Sūrat al-Nās.
ʿUmdat al-Tafsīr is therefore particularly valuable for readers seeking the substance of Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr in a more concentrated form, with reduced repetition and technical digression and with special attention to the evaluation of transmitted material. It is especially suitable for students of Tafsīr and Ḥadīth, while retaining enough of Ibn Kathīr’s original discussion to serve as considerably more than a brief summary.
