Mahajjat al-Salikin wa Yalihi Kitab Tatbiq Hukm al-Tariqah al-Aliyyah

Maḥajjat al-Sālikīn, followed by Taṭbīq Ḥukm al-Ṭarīqah al-ʿAliyyah ʿalā al-Aḥkām al-Sharʿiyyah al-Nabawiyyah (محجة السالكين ويليه كتاب تطبيق حكم الطريقة العلية على الأحكام الشرعية النبوية) brings together two works concerned with Islamic spirituality, proper conduct and the regulation of Sufi practice according to the Sharīʿah.

The first, Maḥajjat al-Sālikīn, is arranged into three principal chapters. It begins with the beliefs required of the spiritual wayfarer, including a presentation of the author’s creed; proceeds to love of the Prophet ﷺ, his family and Companions, and obedience to the Muslim rulers; and then discusses upright character and righteous deeds, including Prophetic character and examples from the conduct of the early righteous scholars. It concludes with selected beneficial sayings transmitted from the Salaf.

The second work, Taṭbīq Ḥukm al-Ṭarīqah al-ʿAliyyah ʿalā al-Aḥkām al-Sharʿiyyah al-Nabawiyyah, examines the Rifāʿī ṭarīqah and its practices in the light of Islamic law. It discusses its claimed lineage and transmission, questions surrounding al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī and the chains of the ṭarīqah, and then treats the terminology, customs and practices associated with the Rifāʿiyyah. Particular attention is given to distinguishing legitimate taṣawwuf from improper innovations and later practices, evaluating matters such as gatherings of dhikr, taking the spiritual covenant, khalwah, forms of dress and other customs according to the principles of the Sharīʿah.
