Izalat al-Khafa' 'an Khilafat al-Khulafa'

One of the most important works of the great Indian scholar and muḥaddith Shāh Walī Allāh al-Dihlawī (d. 1176 AH), devoted to the Rightly Guided Caliphate, the virtues and achievements of the Khulafāʾ al-Rāshidūn, and the textual and rational proofs establishing their legitimate succession. Originally composed in Persian, the work also contains important discussions of Shāh Walī Allāh’s understanding of Islamic political thought and the institution of the Caliphate.

The work is broadly divided into two principal sections. The first establishes the nature and principles of the Caliphate and presents evidence from the Qurʾān, Sunnah and early Islamic tradition for the legitimacy of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. It discusses the qualifications and characteristics of the Caliphate, the succession and relative virtues of the Companions, and a range of theological and historical questions surrounding the early Muslim leadership. The second section presents the virtues, distinguished deeds and achievements of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī رضي الله عنهم, while addressing controversies and objections raised concerning their caliphates. The book consequently became particularly celebrated as a substantial Sunni response to Shīʿī criticisms of the Companions and the early Caliphate.

This impressive Dār al-Qalam, Damascus edition is especially noteworthy. Published in five large volumes comprising 2,779 pages, it was critically edited and extensively annotated by the distinguished ḥadīth scholar Prof. Dr. Taqī al-Dīn al-Nadwī, with the Arabic rendering attributed in the bibliographical record to Jāwīd Aḥmad al-Nadwī. The edition therefore makes Shāh Walī Allāh’s substantial Persian work accessible to Arabic readers in a carefully researched scholarly presentation.
