al-Bahr al-Zakhkhar: Musnad al-Bazzar

A major early collection of Prophetic Ḥadīth by the eminent ḥadīth master Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Khāliq al-Bazzār (d. 292 AH). Commonly known as Musnad al-Bazzār and published under the title al-Baḥr al-Zakhkhār, it is an especially valuable source for advanced Ḥadīth study because al-Bazzār frequently combines the transmission of a report with critical observations concerning its chains, narrators, variant routes and degree of uniqueness. The complete modern edition extends to eighteen volumes.

Like the other classical masānīd, the work is organised principally according to the Companions who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, rather than according to the chapters of Fiqh. Within the individual Companion sections, however, al-Bazzār frequently arranges material according to the Tābiʿī transmitters who narrated from that Companion. This structure makes the work particularly useful for tracing the transmission history of individual reports and comparing the routes through which a Companion's narrations were preserved.

What distinguishes the Musnad from many other large collections is al-Bazzār's extensive critical commentary after the narrations. He regularly draws attention to such matters as a report being known only through a particular route, a narrator being alone in transmitting it, the existence or absence of supporting transmissions, and the reliability or obscurity of individual narrators. Phrases such as lā naʿlamuhu yurwā… illā min hādhā al-wajh occur characteristically throughout the work. These remarks make Musnad al-Bazzār an important source not merely for collecting aḥādīth, but for ʿIlal al-Ḥadīth, al-jarḥ wa’l-taʿdīl, tafarrud and the comparative study of isnāds.

The collection is also particularly valuable for preserving additional and less commonly transmitted material beyond the better-known canonical collections. Later ḥadīth scholars made extensive use of it when gathering zawāʾid. Most notably, al-Haythamī extracted the narrations of al-Bazzār additional to the Six Books in Kashf al-Astār ʿan Zawāʾid al-Bazzār, and incorporated relevant material from it into his celebrated Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid. For researchers tracing a narration beyond the Kutub al-Sittah, al-Bazzār is consequently an important early source.

The work should not, however, be understood as a collection restricted to ṣaḥīḥ narrations. Al-Bazzār's purpose was considerably broader, and the Musnad contains reports of differing grades. Indeed, one of its principal scholarly benefits lies precisely in the author's comments upon unusual chains, problematic transmitters and narrations transmitted through limited routes.

The complete text was first brought into print through the major critical edition begun by Dr. Maḥfūẓ al-Raḥmān Zayn Allāh, who edited volumes 1–9; ʿĀdil ibn Saʿd subsequently edited volumes 10–17, and Ṣabrī ʿAbd al-Khāliq al-Shāfiʿī volume 18. The project extended over more than two decades, beginning in 1988 and reaching completion in 2009.

The Dār al-Kutub al-ʿIlmiyyah, Beirut issue specified here is entitled al-Baḥr al-Zakhkhār al-Maʿrūf bi-Musnad al-Bazzār – maʿa al-Fahāris and was published in 2009. It provides the complete Musnad together with indexes, making this important early source particularly useful for serious students and researchers of Ḥadīth, isnād criticism, narrator studies, ʿilal and zawāʾid literature.
