al-Fawa'id al-Bahiyyah fi Tarajim al-Hanafiyyah

Al-Fawāʾid al-Bahiyyah fī Tarājim al-Ḥanafiyyah by the renowned Indian Ḥanafī scholar Imām ʿAbd al-Ḥayy al-Laknawī (d. 1304 AH) is an important biographical dictionary devoted to the scholars and jurists of the Ḥanafī madhhab.

Summarised from Kafawi's detailed "Kat'ib A'lam al-Akhyar", this work brings together concise biographies of a large number of Ḥanafī authorities from different periods and regions, providing information on their names and lineages, teachers and students, scholarly standing, writings, dates of death, and contributions to the madhhab. Particular attention is given to jurists whose opinions and works became important references within later Ḥanafī literature, making the book especially useful for identifying scholars encountered in works of fiqh, fatwā and legal commentary.

Al-Laknawī supplements the biographical material with numerous scholarly, bibliographical and historical observations, frequently clarifying confusion between similarly named scholars, correcting erroneous dates or attributions, identifying books and their authors, and critically assessing information transmitted in earlier biographical sources. These characteristic investigations give the work a value extending beyond straightforward biography.

This is the beautiful and colourful muhaqqaq edition from Dar al-Qalam. The muhaqqiq corrected many errors found in previous editions of the book.

The second volume of this edition is the author's other work on Hanafi tarajim, "Tarb al-Amathil" covering fuqaha not mentioned in al-Fawaid al-Bahiyyah.
