The shuruh of hadith by the ulama of India are widely-acclaimed and valued by ulama. This sharh, by a master muhaddith and faqih, Salam Allah ad-Dihlawi (d. 1233 ah) is no exception.

One could go through the dirasah of the muhaqqiq for a list of the various salient characteristics of this sharh or read through the half a dozen taqariz on the book by senior ulama, however it seems that this book stands out for two reasons:

• The author seems to have had amazing ittila’ on the works before him, especially on muhaqqaq shuruh of hadith. He thus brings the khulasah of the tahqiqqat of the research scholars before him, always quoting masters like Ibn Hajr, Ibn Daqiq al-‘Id etc. So, while this sharh isn’t as detailed as others like Awjaz, you get everything you require here, which makes it ideal for those who don’t have the time to study lengthy shuruh

• The manhaj of the author seems very similar to Ml Abd al-Hayy al-Laknawi, who came after him. When bringing adillah or replies to ahadith, he critically examines each dalil and reply, whether it is for his madhab or against and often points out the issues with it.

This is an important sharh on the Muatta, just printed for the first time. The importance of it could be gauged from the fact that nearly all the hawashi on the Indian prints of the Muatta are taken from this sharh.
