Tarikh Bayt al-Maqdis

A focused historical study of Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis) under Muslim rule, from the conquest during the caliphate of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb until the end of the Ayyubid period. Rather than treating Jerusalem merely as part of a broader political history, the author concentrates specifically on the city, drawing upon the rich tradition of local histories and geographical works that preserve details often absent from general chronicles.

The study begins with the ʿUmarī conquest and briefly surveys the Umayyad, Abbasid and Fatimid periods before devoting its principal attention to the two major phases that shaped Jerusalem during the Crusading era: the Frankish occupation (492–583 AH / 1099–1187 CE) and the subsequent Ayyubid period (583–650 AH / 1187–1252 CE). Particular attention is given to the restoration of Jerusalem to Muslim rule following the Battle of Ḥaṭṭīn and the revival of its Islamic, cultural and scholarly life.

Beyond political events, the author examines important aspects of the city's administrative, social, cultural and architectural history, seeking to reconstruct Jerusalem as a living urban centre rather than simply recounting changes of rulers. The work makes extensive use of diverse historical sources, including local chronicles and Arabic geographical literature, which supply valuable information on the city's urban development, economic activity, social life and intellectual and cultural conditions.
