Students and Ulama often ask: “What is the best, most detailed, relied-upon tafsir?”
While you would get many different answers to this question, it seems that many of our ulama favour Allamah Alusi’s Ruh al-Ma’ani.
Our Ustad, Mawlana Hasan Docrat sahib, under whom we studied half of Jalalayn, as well as Tafsir al-Baydawi, was the one who emphasised the importance of this amazing work. Not only would he frequently be seen making mutala of it, but would at times bring a volume to class and read out important sections from it.
Hadrat Hakim Akhtar sahib would also frequently quote this in his discourses.

When one studies Allamah Alusi’s manhaj, it becomes clear why this tafsir is so popular.
The author firstly was a muhaqqiq in tafsir, quoting the various muhaqqiqin from the mufassirin, selecting the view that seems most correct and pointing out issues with the other views.

The book covers all the major aqwal in a concise manner, allowing one to be relatively sure that nothing major has been missed.

The author filled the book with lughah, nahw, balagha, qira’at and every other field essential to understanding the Quran, yet did it in a manner that allows the book to be easily understood, unlike many of the works he relied upon, like Baydawi etc.

At the same time, he didn’t sacrifice the naql side, bringing the various ahadith and aqwal of salaf when relevant.

Being the Hanafi Mufti of Iraq, the book is beneficial in presenting the Hanafi Ahkam, plus being a sufi, he also focuses on the spiritual side.

This is the best print of the book, a huge, muhaqqaq edition, edited using the manuscript gifted by the author to the Sultan. This edition, based on the most authentic manuscript of the book, proved that the allegations of tampering in previous prints of the book was false. Yes, the previous editions had thousands of typos etc, which were corrected in this edition.
