Imam Muhammad’s al-Jami as-Saghir possesses the salient characteristic of being the only book from the books of Zahir ar-Riwayah in the Hanafi Madhab that features explicit mention of every mas’alah being narrated directly from Imam Abu Hanifah.
While it contains a fraction of the masail found in Imam Muhammad’s al-Asl, it features a number of important masail, that aren’t covered in al-Asl.
Some of these are
- Aqiqah is mubah, not sunnah or mustahab
- Men are only permitted to use rings of silver
- Permission for taharri and consumption when a few haram carcasses are mixed up with majority halal ones
A great resource for these masail is the commentaries on al-Jami as-Saghir, as they generally clearly discuss the ruling of these masail, the adillah and the reasoning behind them. A specialist in fiqh should have each of these important commentaries.
This sharh of al-Kardari, is one of the most recent shuruh on Jami as-Saghir to be published for the first time.
The salient feature of this sharh is the mention of the Asl for each bab, something none of the other commentaries paid attention to.
This commentary isn't like other commentaries in that you wouldn't find the matn here. The author mentions the Asl which the chapter is based on, then dives directly into the fiqh, discussing furu', adillah etc, without bringing the matn of Jami as-Saghir.
A very good resource to properly understand the fiqh behind each chapter, something we are generally lacking in.
Edited using the only known existing manuscript of the book.
High-quality edition, in 3 thick volumes.
