Sharh Qatr al-Nada wa-'Alayhi Hashiyat al-Suja'i

أحمد بن أحمد السجاعي

A valuable classical work on Arabic grammar (ʿIlm al-Naḥw), comprising the marginal commentary of Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Sujāʿī (d. 1197 AH) on the celebrated Sharḥ Qaṭr al-Nadā wa-Ball al-Ṣadā of Imām Ibn Hishām al-Anṣārī (d. 761 AH).

Qaṭr al-Nadā is one of the most widely studied intermediate texts of Arabic grammar, distinguished by its systematic presentation of grammatical principles and its concise yet comprehensive treatment of the essential subjects of Naḥw. Ibn Hishām subsequently composed his own commentary upon the text, explaining its terminology, providing grammatical examples and supporting its discussions with evidence from the Qurʾān and classical Arabic usage.

Al-Sujāʿī's Ḥāshiyah builds upon this celebrated commentary, offering further explanations, clarifications and valuable grammatical observations. It addresses points that require additional elaboration, examines technical distinctions and helps readers appreciate the precision of Ibn Hishām's grammatical discussions.

The work is particularly beneficial for students progressing beyond the introductory stages of Arabic grammar, as it introduces them to the more detailed analytical approach characteristic of the classical Ḥawāshī tradition. It also provides teachers with additional explanations and grammatical insights for use when teaching Sharḥ Qaṭr al-Nadā.

An important feature of this Dār al-Fajr edition is the inclusion of a supplementary work, Sharḥ wa-Iʿrāb Shawāhid Qaṭr al-Nadā, by Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Khaṭīb al-Shirbīnī (d. 977 AH).

This accompanying work explains and analyses the grammatical evidences (Shawāhid) cited in Qaṭr al-Nadā, helping students understand how the examples support the grammatical principles under discussion. It is particularly useful for developing the ability to analyse classical Arabic constructions and appreciate the relationship between grammatical rules and their textual evidence.

Together, these works offer three complementary levels of grammatical study: Ibn Hishām's foundational text and commentary, al-Sujāʿī's detailed marginal observations, and al-Shirbīnī's explanation and grammatical analysis of the Shawāhid.

This edition, prepared by Qāsim ibn Muḥammad Āghā al-Nūrī and published by Maktabat Dār al-Fajr, Damascus, comprises 608 pages in one volume. It was published in 1440 AH / 2019 CE.

An excellent resource for students and teachers of Arabic grammar, particularly those studying Qaṭr al-Nadā in traditional Islamic seminaries. Its combination of the original commentary, scholarly annotations and detailed treatment of grammatical evidence makes it especially useful for developing a deeper and more precise understanding of classical Arabic syntax.
