Most of us realise that we need to seriously study Nahw and not just suffice on the basic works we learnt in Madrasah.
The question is: Where do we start?

While the ideal method is memorisation of the Alfiyyah of Ibn Malik with a deep study of its commentaries, the reality is that memorisation of mutun isn’t suited to all.
For many, the time and effort exerted in memorisation of mutun would be better spent studying commentaries and more-detailed texts, focusing on understanding over memorisation.

For this, Awdah al-Masalik of the master Nahwi, Ibn Hisham is ideal.What is Awdah al-Masalik?
While technically a commentary on the Alfiyyah, it differs from your conventional commentary in that it doesn’t mention the matn, so no poetry to focus on!
It could be considered a dars on the Alfiyyah, explaining each section in easy-to-understand language, without having to go into explaining each word of the text.

It should be clear, that this isn’t an entry-level work for rank beginners; rather it is an intermediate level work, authored in clear language that makes understanding of the detailed discussions in it easy.
This is probably why it is rated as one of the best, if not the best, commentary on the Alfiyyah.

The Egyptian Lughawi, Abd al-Aziz an-Najjar, realised the need for work on Awdah al-Masalik, thus he authored Diya as-Salik.

What is Diya as-Salik?It is a detailed ta’liq that
- explains difficult passages
- provides definitions
- provides the text of the Alfiyyah for each section
- explains the poetry used by Ibn Hisham
- provides tamrinat at the end of each section
in addition to other fawaid.

The result is a book that leaves you with no excuse to not work on advancing your Nahw.
