In order for one to be considered proficient in a language, one should know the correct usage of each word. While some words are technically synonyms, there would be times were usage of one would be more accurate than the other and there might even be situations were usage of the other would be a complete disaster!

The following example illustrates it well:
The words “command” and “order” are synonyms. You could say “I order you to do …” or “I command you to do…”.
This is what caused a French-speaking friend to send me an email saying: “My command is…” following by a list of books.
I was taken aback for a second, then realised that he was placing an order for books and used the word “command” instead of “order”. Both are synonyms, yet usage of “command” here is incorrect, as we all know.
This made me realise how painful our Arabic must be to the ears of أصحاب لغة الضاد.

What is the solution?
The only way is to spend years, carefully studying classical adab works, coupled with writing and speaking using the vocab learned. Just studying a few Arabic readers and expecting to gain such expertise is wishful thinking.
