Good commentaries of hadith are important tools for an alim, not only allowing him to properly understand ahadith but also providing beneficial content for bayans.
While there are many commentaries available for the major books like al-Kutub as-Sittah, there are just a few really outstanding commentaries available that cover a wide-range of ahadith, both in and out of the six books.
Hadith Masters, like Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah, May Allah Ta’ala preserve him, recommend two books for sharh of hadith.
One is well known to all and found in most personal libraries. It is Mulla Ali Qari’s al-Mirqat, famous for his excellent commentary, which is filled with fawaid.
The other, sadly, is unknown to most.
It is Allamah Munawi’s masterpiece, his detailed sharh on Allamah Suyuti’s al-Jami as-Saghir, titled Fayd al-Qadir.
Al-Jami as-Saghir is a selection of 10000 hadith, most of which aren’t in al-Kutub as-Sittah, thus unknown to most ulama.
Allamah Munawi not only provided expert commentary, filled with fawaid, but also discusses the strength of each narration, as al-Jami as-Saghir does contain a number of problematic narrations.
It is a good Beirut print, in 6 volumes, with cream paper, featuring the text of al-Jami as-Saghir at the top of each page.
