In an age where hearts are hardened and tears struggle to
flow, this remarkable work of exhortation and advice by the Hanbalī polymath
and gifted orator, Ibn al-Jawzī, should be read time and time again. Filled
with heart-softening stories, emotive poetry, and forthright admonition at
times, this work pushes a person to reconnect with their Creator before it is
too late. The author was a renowned orator at whose hands many renewed their
covenant to Islam, and the hope is that this translation into the English
language will have the same effect on its readers.
Abd ar-Raḥmān ibn 'Alī al-Jawzī, often referred to as Ibn al-Jawzī,
is one of those unique scholars who combined scholarly excellence with a deep
concern for the salvation of the Muslim community. Famed for his knowledge, he
was known for being an incredibly gifted orator, with hundreds of thousands of
Muslim repenting at his hands over his remarkable lifetime. Born in the year
518 AH, he passed away nearly 80 years later in 597 AH, leaving behind seminal
works in the sciences of hadith, tafsīr, and exhortation (wa'z) - one of which
is between your hands today.
