In 1877, history's first Islamic civil law came into force in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. It was called Majallat al-Ahkam al-Adliyyah. The law was originally published in Turkish language, and later translated to Arabic. Commendable efforts were made to translate it to English, Urdu and other languages widely spoken by Muslim. However, most of the available editions in English language had some shortcomings.
In 2020, Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance at IIUM (Malaysia) decided to initiate a project of translating parts of Majalla to English with short notes to link the provisions given in the original text with modern day banking practices. Further, this edition shares changes done to Majallah as per the recommendation made by the Amendment Committee few years before its repeal.
