Maulana (Dr) Yunoos Osman and Dr Farouk Amod have worked hard in compiling this work. They have rightly observed in the introduction that the Muslim contribution to science and culture and to world civilization has largely been ignored. It does not form a part of syllabuses at universities or schools.
A regrettable fact is that the Muslim countries themselves have ignored to include these intellectual and academic contributions of Muslims in their higher and lower educational curricula. Consequently, Muslim youths graduating from universities and traditional Islamic institutions have no idea whatsoever of their ancestors' rich contribution to various facets of world civilization and culture.
Over and above, western writers and authors aggravated the situation even more by anglicizing the names of Muslim scientists and scholars, as a result of which their original Arabic names are not commonly known.
This book provides glimpses of Muslim contribution to modern civilization. Thus, this compilation forms a part of the corrective movement initiated by several Muslim authors by compiling treatises on the subject.
The authors have made a genuine effort to acquaint the readers with Muslims' rich contribution to various branches of knowledge from medicine, astronomy, botany and chemistry to geography, mathematics, philosophy and political science.
As this book provides an overview of Muslims' contribution to world civilization, it would be of tremendous benefit and value if it is prescribed as an additional reading textbook, at least from grade nine onwards, at Muslim schools and also at Darul Ulooms at some stage during their course of study
